Day one, 2,255 words written. I am not sure how many times I stopped myself from writing an adverb (thank you, Stephen King). I think I did a pretty good job conveying personality in other ways. So far, I am really happy with it. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about something I wrote. I like having a really loose idea of what’s going to happen and then letting whatever happens, happen. What surprised me the most was how effortless it was. It just pretty much came out, boom. I think the fact that I have been doing a lot of writing in general, especially on this blog, has helped me with flow. I tell my students this kind of thing all the time, but it’s great to see it’s actually true.
Meanwhile, I’m flying through Stephen King’s [amazon_link id=”1439156816″ target=”_blank” ]On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft[/amazon_link] so fast that I think I could be done with it tomorrow. Probably the best book I’ve read on creative writing.

Nice work. On Writing is an excellent book with the simplest, most usable advice on writing I've encountered. I recommend the book to all of my creative writers and friends. Keep on writing!
It's common sense advice, yet it has been immensely helpful. Sometimes refreshers are good.

Glad it's going well! Aren't adverbs a bitch? They're so enticing and wonderful, and so very easy to overuse.
I know! I keep catching myself using them. Then I remind myself it's a draft, and it doesn't have to come out perfect, and in fact that it won't.
Great advice. Now that I am an English minor, (I was going to message you about it today…just declared!) I do a significant amount of writing. This has really helped me get into the "zone" and has allowed my writing to flow more naturally. I am, however, having difficultly choosing a plot to follow…
Julian, I am so proud of you! Of course, it's perfect for you. The most important thing is to read all the time and write all the time. I just reviewed Stephen King's book On Writing in a newer post, and it might be helpful. Great, straightforward, common sense advice. Do not worry so much about the plot. You can revise. The important thing is to try to write. It's a great exercise. I love it. I'm so glad you are writing a NaNoWriMo novel. Keep going!
