The last entry from my paper journal written during my trip to Boston.

2/15 Flight Home

We were much farther from New York this time, but I could still pick it out off in the distance. That’s amazing. I need to travel more. It’s hard with small children. I come from a family not real bent on traveling. When we went somewhere, it was to visit someone — not just for the sake of going there. I like going places, seeing them first hand. Touching history.

It’s funny. I had my camera out ready to take pictures of the ground, but E- was right. The glare from the window renders the sites on the ground impossible to see. Yet I saw it with my eyes. My eyes can go, it would seem, where a camera cannot. I went to Boston. I saw it with my own eyes. Not pictures from a book or film. I was there. I touched a headstone carved for a two-year-old child who died in the 1600s. I watched my students wage a second Battle of Bunker Hill with snowballs. I sat in a pew in one of the oldest churches in America. I sat in complete and perfect silence on the frozen surface of Walden Pond. I became Emerson’s transparent eyeball and took in the city of Boston.

The Handmaid’s Tale

Last night I completed Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopic vision of America’s near future as governed by the religious right. Some time in the 1980s, I suppose, “feminist” became a dirty word. It is an insult, spat with the same venom as “liberal.” It is no surprise that Atwood’s novel was published, then, in the 1980s, during the Reagan-era bashing of both feminists and liberals.

According to Webster’s, feminism is “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” and “organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests.” I am a feminist. I think a great many people today are misinformed about what feminism really means. They will say they believe in gender equality, but they are not feminists. What’s the difference? It’s a matter of connotation.

The Handmaid’s Tale centers around Offred, a handmaid in the near future after ecological disaster has decreased fertility among women and viability among infants. Offred has viable ovaries, so she, along with her fellow handmaids, have been given the task of producing children. In fact, their lives depend on it. Political disaster occurs when the president is assassinated and Congress is slaughtered in a rain of machine-gunfire. The Constitution is suspended. In a cashless society, it is easy to cut women off from their money. The way Offred tells the tale, it seems as though freedoms eroded bit by bit. One day, she turned around, and she was divested of all her rights. She no longer lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, but in the Republic of Gilead. And there is no balm in Gilead.

I find it very ironic that Atwood chose to set her story in Cambridge, a city known for its liberal views — so much so, in fact, that it is often known as the “People’s Republic of Cambridge.” Atwood seems to be saying that the events in her book could happen anywhere — even in one of the major strongholds of liberalism. In her novel, Harvard ceases to be a university and becomes the headquarters for the Eyes, the (of course) omnipresent force of spies that keep the citizens of Gilead in line… or else they wind up hanging from hooks on the wall by Harvard Yard. During my recent trip to Boston, I walked along Massachusetts Avenue, right by that wall. I didn’t go inside the campus, but one of my students did. She made a very interesting observation — moreso to me now that I’ve read this book. She said once you go behind that wall, it is quiet. You can’t hear the traffic flying by on the other side of the wall. What an ideal setting for Atwood’s Eyes.

The title of The Handmaid’s Tale hearkens back to Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. I think that is appropriate. In some ways, Chaucer was attacking his own society’s views through humor, and Offred’s “gallows humor” contributes much to the book’s success. I found her to be a very human character. She does not always make admirable choices, but she makes believable ones. She is not an epic heroine, but rather a woman living under extraordinary circumstances.

If Atwood is not quite fair to the religious right in America, one cannot deny that there are women in this world who live very much like the characters in this novel. I do not think most people in the religious right, especially women, would like to live like Atwood’s characters. However, I think this novel serves as fair warning to the Phyllis Schlaflys of the world. Atwood does not limit her critique to the religious right. She also takes feminists to task for their staunch opposition to pornography. Atwood insinuates that it is dangerous to censor such material, regardless of our thoughts on the issue.

This novel was frightening. As I read, I was not so much scared that this will one day happen in America. What really scared me is that it is happening in many parts of the world, right now, as I write this. I don’t know what can be done to change that, but I think we need to try.

The Awakening

Oh, dear reader, I have been remiss. I didn’t post my review of Kate Chopin’s classic short novel, The Awakening as soon as I was finished, and I need to update my bookshelf.

The Awakening was difficult for me to read. It wasn’t that I found it over my head conceptually — it was just hard for me to watch Edna Pontellier’s downward spiral. She wanted so badly to be a free spirit, but she was doomed before she ever began. A society bent on conformity was not her only obstacle — she also faced her own inability to truly see what she needed to be in order to be free of contraint. She needed to become Mademoiselle Reisz.

I recently taught this novel, and I found myself steering towards a feminist critic’s take on it. I think it might be the best analysis of the novel. Three men in Edna’s life seek to possess her for different purposes. Her husband, Léonce, wants a submissive, conventional wife and mother to tend to his house and children. Alcée Arobin is after another notch on his bedpost. I think perhaps Robert Lebrun is the most dangerous of all — he wants Edna, but he is not willing to defy convention to be with her. He toys with her feelings and controls her more than her husband or lover, Arobin, ever do. It is when Edna sees that even true love is not enough to move Robert against society that she succumbs to the seduction of the sea and drowns herself. Don’t hate me because I gave away the ending. It was known to me the entire time I read the book and did not lessen my appreciation of the book.

The Awakening is a very quick read. My copy was only about 100 pages. I felt Chopin’s character development was an achievement. The characters were realistic. Edna is very flawed, but Chopin presents her just as we might see her with no editorial lens on the part of the author skewing our vision. I felt her description was especially vivid. I had a clear picture of Grande Isle and old New Orleans as I read. There are so many levels to this book, and I think it still speaks to the ways in which we constrain ourselves, whether society is really at fault or not. I was reminded of Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence, which is another favorite of mine.

I don’t know how I went 33 years before reading this book, but I’m glad I didn’t go any longer. You shouldn’t either.

Standardized Testing

Mia Kang is a freshman at McArthur High School, presumably in San Antonio. She makes good grades. But she thinks one test, taken on one day, does not “measure what kids really need to know, [it] measure[s] what’s easy to measure.” She added, “We should be learning concepts and skills, not just memorizing. It’s sad for kids and it’s sad for teachers too.”

Amen!

A local public school system, Gwinnett County Public Schools, requires students to take Gateway Tests in grades 4 and 7 in addition to state-mandated writing tests in grade 5, 8, and 11, and graduation tests in grade 11. Supposedly, this prevents students who have not learned certain concepts from being passed along. The only problem is that a 7th grader can fail every single subject and make a passing grade on the Gateway — and that student will pass 7th grade. In addition, the passing score hovers around 30. Where else in life is a passing score so low? I think it is ridiculous. It places undue pressure on the students to perform well on a test that is virtually meaningless and ignores the fact that the single biggest factor in a student’s success is not whether they can pass a test, but whether they can apply themselves to do the work necessary to make passing grades. It is a slap in the face to any teacher who works hard to teach a student to think, to learn concepts, only to be measured by whether or not that student can pass a test.

That great innovator of education, George W. Bush, has brought this legacy of extensive standardized testing from Texas to the nation. This is what No Child Left Behind looks like. Teachers will teach to the test, because their jobs depend on it, and students will learn what they need to know for the test and get ulcers from test anxiety.

That is, unless more students like Mia realize that some battles really might be worth fighting for.

Another entry from my Boston paper journal, written right after my visit with my old friend, Ha.

2/14 (technically 2/15) Ha

Seeing Ha again was amazing! She looks just like Ha. The same! I’d have recognized her in a heartbeat. We talked about our kids, Barbie, gay marriage, Judaism, Transcendentalism. What didn’t we cover in our short hour-long visit? She was just — Ha. The ease with which we slipped into conversation again was… what word? Unexpected? Maybe? Maybe because Ha went to Harvard and has this amazing career as a designer, I was expecting her to be different? How stupid of me. The years slipped away as we reminisced about her dog Sunny, days playing with Barbie dolls, old school teachers and friends. We were grown-ups reconnecting after 20 years, but the years fell away like they hadn’t even passed. And yet there was mature, intellectual discourse — exchange of ideas. We talked about gay marriage in Massachusetts, abortion, religion, family, nursing children, kids — our own and those down the hall who won’t go to bed.

The kids will not sleep tonight! Well, whatever. I’m going to bed.

I’m so glad I saw Ha!

So that was my paper journal, written when I was very tired and rambling a bit. But truthfully, how does one really describe how it feels to see a friend after 20 years? I don’t think you can. We were so easy with each other. We talked about so much in the time she was able to visit. I can’t believe how fortunate I was to be able to spend time with her, and I’m so glad we were able to work it out. We had a great time. I wish my feeble words could do it justice.

Looking for Good Tea?

While I was in Boston, we had some free time to shop at Harvard Square. I stopped in at Tealuxe, which bills itself as a tea bar and cafe. The place had a wonderful atmosphere. According to their website, they came into existence on Harvard Square only in 1996, but it has the feel of a place that has occupied the same space for ages — creaky wooden floors, tables too close together, shelves of tea and tea-making implements. I’ve had better tea, but to be honest, I tried the Earl Grey, and after perusing their menu of teas online, it sounds like I should have been more adventurous. I also didn’t wait long enough for it to brew. I couldn’t find the milk anywhere, and frankly, I don’t think that’s something you should have to ask for with tea. Sugar and various sweeteners were provided, however.

I love a good cup of tea. Every time I go to the Georgia Renaissance Festival, I have to stop in for a pot of tea at the Peacock Tearoom. To be honest, the service is usually anywhere from mediocre to horrible. Sometimes it takes forever to get noticed, and you don’t get your tea any too quickly either. But their scones and clotted cream are pretty good.

I’m tearoom deprived. Evan showed up while I was at Tealuxe and informed me that I had found his old hangout (he used to live in Boston and taught at Gann Academy). I asked him later if he could recommend a good place for tea in Atlanta. He recommended Teavana in Lenox and some place in Little Five Points. Well, I wanted something closer the the atmosphere in Tealuxe, so Teavana being ensconced in an upscale mall wasn’t exactly going to do it (though they do have a great selection of teas and good service, or at least the one in the Mall of Georgia did). And whenever am I going to be able to go to Little Five Points?

There is a tearoom in downtown Roswell, Mittie’s Restaurant and Tearoom, within walking distance from my house. I decided to try to find out more about it, and lo and behold, I discovered TeaMap. If you are looking for a good tearoom near you, you can enter your zip code and peruse the results. I found out that Mittie’s has universally bad reviews, so I won’t waste my time. However, the tearoom I pass daily on my way to work, The Farmhouse Tea Shoppe (though I confess I don’t remember that being the name, but I may not have been paying attention) has good reviews, and Tea Leaves and Thyme in Woodstock has great reviews. Vintage Tea in Alpharetta also looks like a good place to try. Actually, I found out there are quite a few good prospects nearby.

Hmmm… I sense in my future a weekly me-time spent trying out these various tearooms, reflecting over my week. I think a weekly pot of good tea could really change my outlook. I should live in England. I really should. Do my fellow Georgians have any recommendations?

Another entry from my paper travel journal. This is a journal exercise Evan asked us to do. Actually, I guess it needs a bit of explanation. On the 14th, we went several places. We started our day with a trip to Walden Pond. From there, we went to Gann Academy to hear Kim Crawford Harvie speak. I have written about both experiences. After that, we shopped around Harvard Square for a while, then went to Revolution Books to speak with the owners, who are communists. We shopped some more, then went to Brandeis to speak with Bradley Solmsen, who is on the faculty in Judaics. I need to write about the whole thing at the communist bookstore. I didn’t write anything really in my travel journal. Maybe I’ll share that experience later.

2/14 Power and Truth

I think in this case power was ability to captivate an audience. I personally wasn’t enthralled, but it seems like most everyone else was.

Revolution Books

These people perceive power as revolution and overthrowing current “regimes.” I felt they were a bit frightening and perhaps constructed their own truth to fit their beliefs. Also, I don’t get how not voting is revolutionary, and I’m glad the kids nailed them on that. If I heard the word “proletariat” one more time, I think I was going to scream. On the other hand, I think it was valuable for the kids to see and hear people with different ideas. How on earth anyone could idolize Mao or Lenin is beyond me.

Kim

I was intrigued by Kim’s conviction. I think it puts her in a position of power. I was glad she mentioned Christ’s lack of expressed views on homosexuality.

Bradley

I really didn’t get him. I don’t know how a classroom would work under his guidance. I can’t connect either concept (power or truth) with what he said.

Walden

I felt the power of God in the form of nature. I’m sure was of it was the symbolism of the place. But I did get Emerson’s transparent eyeball. I always felt God in nature, but I never felt as absorbed by nature as I did there.

Me

I am decidedly not a communist. All kidding aside, to me, power and truth were in my communion with the kids. I was myself and there was truth in that, but also power. I feel stronger bonds with them, and bonds are power. Harvard’s motto is “Veritas,” or Truth. I take that to mean they pass on a legacy of truth. What is my legacy, and what kind of power or truth will it have?
